Gravel Driveway Calculator

Plan gravel for a new or topped-up driveway.

Enter your driveway length, width, and gravel depth to see how much you need.

How this calculation works

This gravel driveway calculator estimates the gravel needed for a new driveway or a top-up layer. We multiply length by width for the area, multiply by depth (inches converted to feet), and divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

Driveways are usually built in layers — a deeper base of larger stone with a finer top coat. A common top-up depth is about 4 inches. We also estimate tonnage using 1.4 tons per cubic yard and a rough cost of $40 per cubic yard.

For a brand-new driveway, plan on a total depth of 6–8 inches across two or more layers, and add about 10% extra for compaction.
