Topsoil Calculator
Estimate cubic yards of soil for beds and lawns.
Enter your length, width, and depth to see how much soil you need.
How this calculation works
This topsoil calculator estimates how much soil you need to fill a bed, level a lawn, or build a raised garden. We multiply length by width for the area, multiply by the depth (inches converted to feet) for cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
Bulk soil is sold by the cubic yard; bagged soil is sold in cubic feet (most bags are 1.5 cu ft). The cost estimate assumes about $30 per cubic yard for bulk delivery, which is usually cheaper than bags for larger jobs.
For new lawns, 3–6 inches of quality topsoil is typical. For raised beds, fill to your box height. Soil settles, so order a little extra.
