Mulch Calculator
Estimate cubic yards and cost for any garden bed.
Enter your bed length, width, and desired depth to see how much mulch you need.
How this calculation works
This mulch calculator tells you exactly how much mulch you need for any garden bed or landscape area. We multiply the length and width to get the square footage, then multiply by the depth you want (in inches) and convert everything to cubic yards — the standard unit mulch is sold in.
The formula is simple: cubic yards = (length × width × depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Dividing by 12 converts inches to feet, and dividing by 27 converts cubic feet to cubic yards. The cost estimate multiplies the cubic yards by an average price for the mulch type you choose.
A typical flower bed gets 2–3 inches of mulch. For weed suppression, 3–4 inches is common. Remember that too deep can suffocate plant roots, and it's always better to order a little extra than to make a second trip.
